How to Switch Careers and Become a Web Developer

Do you find yourself wondering if you are on the right career path? Are you feeling unfulfilled by your current job duties? Are you a seasoned vet in the industry, but have grown tired of the same routine and are thinking about making the jump into a new industry? Or are you a rookie still green in your first career, but you are not so sure it’s for you and are wanting to pivot into something else? Well, my friend, you are not alone. And better yet, you have come to the right place.

If the above questions apply to you, then you should seriously consider a career in the booming industry of technology. As our world becomes increasingly more tech-reliant, there is a growing demand for skilled programming professionals with the know-how to design, build and maintain the tech tools we all use everyday.

If you find yourself wondering about the exciting world of tech, but don’t have a traditional tech education, have no fear. Anticipating traditional tech education routes of earning a computer science, information technology or even a software engineering degree are quickly being replaced with more efficient methods of learning, such as learning the programming skills you need to succeed in the tech industry at Coding Bootcamps.

A coding bootcamp is a short-term, intensive program that will take you from little or no experience with coding to being a certified professional program in less than a year. Many of these schools, such as Galvanize, offer a wide range of class options. If you have the time and ability, you can enroll in full-time in-person programs; if you need part-time, evening classes or online classes, these options are viable as well.

Even better is the fact that you don’t need to go into massive amounts of student debt to get your coding skills. Most bootcamps also offer an array of affordable tuition financing options, such as Deferred Tuition Payments and Income Sharing Agreements. These financing routes let you apply, enroll and complete your bootcamp with the signed agreement that you will pay back the affordable bootcamp tuition after you have landed your first programming job.

Alright, you now know where to look to get on the right education path. Now let’s take a look at web development, one of the most exciting tech industry career paths that could follow your education.

Web Development

Web Developers are the skilled programmers who design, build and maintain the websites we all use every day. Every time you log on to a website like this one you no doubt see the work of these tech professionals.

Everything from the color formatting, the arrangement of the text, graphics, videos to the linked pages within the website, even the interactive search bars and buttons – all of this was designed and built through many lines of programming language code. There are two main types of web development professionals. Let’s take a look at what each one does.

Front-End Development

Front-end web developers are tasked with programming the visual aspects of a website. They decide where they will go and how it will look. They build out the shell for the design of the website, deciding what certain buttons will do and how they need to work for interactive purposes with the user. This is called the User Experience.

Back-End Development

Back-end web developers are responsible for the bulk of the coding that goes into making a website work and function properly. After the user experience has been laid out, these tech professionals are tasked with building it out, a process that is called building the user interface.

Back-end developers are the programming professionals that make all of the links, functions like search bars and interactive buttons such as “Click Here to Make an Appointment” work as they are supposed to. Back-end web developers typically work with the programming languages of Python, Ruby, Java and PHP.
